Civil War

Virginia leads the nation in Civil War historical sites, and many of them can be found near the Lake Region.

Staunton River Battlefield State Park

Confederate earthworks still remain from the 1864 Battle of Staunton River Bridge at Staunton River Battlefield State Park (not to be confused with Staunton River State Park). The Clover Center, at the north entrance to Battlefield Park focuses on the history of the battle and nearby Mulberry Hill Plantation.

The park also includes a Native American archaeological site and hosts the annual Sappony Indian Festival, celebrating the many native tribes in the area who were collectively known as the Sappony. The Roanoke Station visitor’s center, near the southern entrance to the park, focuses on Native American history in the area.
